Preah Vihear (Khmer: ខេត្តព្រះវិហារ – Khet Preah Vihear) is quite a big northern province of Cambodia. Its capital is called Phnom Tbeng Meanchey. The province is named after the temple of Prasat Preah Vihear. The Province is located in the north of Cambodia border with Thailand and The Dângrêk Mountains ranges.

Preah Vihear is one of the nine provinces that is part of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. Several governments have issued travel warnings to their citizens advising not to travel to this province during an ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. But now the security is stable for travelers who want to travel and stay there.

Administration

The province is subdivided into 7 districts.

  • 1302 – Chhaeb – ឈ្នែប
  • 1303 – Chaom Khsant – ជាំក្សាន្ត
  • 1304 – Kulen – គូលេន
  • 1305 – Rovieng – រវៀង
  • 1306 – Sangkom Thmei – សង្គមថ្មី
  • 1307 – Tbeng Meanchey – ត្បែងមានជ័យ

People

According to Government Census 1998, The total population in Preah Vihear is 538,163 person including 259,347 male and 278,816 female or 3.6% of the total population, which is 14,363,519 person in whole Cambodia (2007, provincial government data). The growth rate is 2.4%. The above number is also consisting of 407,453 persons or 85.5% who are farmers, 29,250 persons or 6% who are fishermen, 35,076 persons or 7.5% who are traders and 4,783 persons or 1% who are government officers.

Preah Vihears local economy is based mainly on fishery, rice and fruit cropping and several garment factories. Especially rural households depend on agriculture and its related sub-sectors.

Weather

Preah Viehar is also get warm and humid temperature with average temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius. The country enjoy tropical climate with warm and humid temperature. In the monsoon season, abundant rain allows for the cultivation of a wide variety of crops. This year-round tropical climate makes Cambodia ideal for developing tourism.
