Hospitality fair moves to Siem Reap to talk business

The third Tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conference, Exhibitions (MICE) Biz Fair 2020 will move to Siem Reap province and will include neighbouring tourism seller-participants to meet with more than 100 international buyers over two full-day business sessions.

The event was planned for February in Phnom Penh. However, after consultation with the department of the marketing and promotion board, of the Ministry of Tourism, the event was shifted to Siem Reap, said Thourn Sinan, founder and chairman of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia Chapter and chairman, IMCT Co Ltd.

“Initiatives and steps need to go forward, to face and to overcome current challenges and stay relevant to the travel segment and our community will be discussed,” Thourn added.

This event is the only travel platform in Cambodia that allows sellers (hotels and resorts, tour operators and tourism-related companies) a business meeting with international buyers from the region to discuss and promote products and services that will lead to their destinations.

Coined the Biz (Business) Fair, the event offers an excellent opportunity for each participating seller to meet face-to-face with each invited buyer to forge new relationships, renew friendships and to discuss business opportunities and, more importantly, to promote our destinations, said Thourn.

Unlike a travel trade fair and exhibition, the key point is allowing the sellers to undertake activities and to allow them to focus on building and get results for themselves in a new all-business session, he added.

Thourn noted that currently there are many good tourism networking sessions organised each month but this event is more to allow local tourism industry businesses and vendors to gather over meals and drinks and listen to outstanding invited keynote speakers. However, it lacks the component of allowing the local travel industry the chance to meet and understand the overseas market buyers’ needs and to help us plan better products and improve services to stay competitive.

“Steps are now taken to undertake the event starting with two sessions in Siem Reap tomorrow and Friday to be followed back in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville in the coming weeks,” he added.

Together with PATA Cambodia Chapter and building on the two previous successful Biz Fair events in 2018 and 2019, we set off to organise the third event – the Tourism and MICE Biz Fair 2020 – at the end of February at B2B Park in Phnom Penh.”

PATA Cambodia Chapter has a plan of action over the next few months to organise and promote several tourism events in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville to promote awareness of domestic travel and destinations to the local market and hold a roadshow exchange to Thailand in April for business and to promote destinations to the Thai market and continue to organise the fourth Biz Fair in Sihanoukville in order to gain back the city’s standing with locals as well as boost tourism arrivals by foreign tourists.

“In recent years Sihanoukville has become known as a city dominated by the Chinese and has suffered bad publicity and bad reviews resulting in a loss of confidence among locals and foreigners. There is a need to correct this perception because we have an excellent cruise seaport and many nice beaches,” Thourn added
