Cambodia is also convenient for travel by boat to and around. Especially when people want to have fresh air, relax from different of transport. Due to extensive river system in Cambodia like Tonlesap Lake (Largest’s Fresh Water Lake in Asia) and Mekong river system A number of trips can be done by boats. Frequent routes are often:
- To/from Laos – At the border crossing for tourists on the Mekong, travel by boat is possible. it may take about 90 minute speedboat ride north of Stung Treng province. The border guards have few opportunities for “alternative” income, and will usually try to make a few extra dollars from scamming tourists.
- To/from Thailand – There are no ferry services between Cambodia. However it is possible to cross the border from Thailand to Koh Kong on foot, take a 15 minute share taxi or motodop (motorbike taxi) ride, and then proceed to Sihanoukville by ferry from there (or vice-versa).
- To/from Vietnam : It’s possible to travel between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh by boat, or by combination of road and boat. Fast boats leave daily from Chau Doc in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and take 5 hours to reach Phnom Penh. Chau Doc is a four hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City. A popular overland route is to make a three day trip, stopping at Can Tho and Chau Doc before taking the boat to Phnom Penh.
- Phnom Penh – Siem Reap: A number of trips can be done by boat, with Phnom Penh to Siem Reap being the most popular.
- Phnom Penh – Kampong Cham – Kratie;
- Siem Reap to Battambang: When the Tonle Sap is low, boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang is not a good idea.
- Note: Lake Tonlé Sap lake offers a fascinating natural phenomenon. During the dry season, it is by comparison small and shallow and Tonlé Sap river flows from it to the south. During the wet season, however, the flooding Mekong’s water masses push north, thereby reversing the Tonlé Sap river’s flow. The lake swells up to five to six times its previous size and serves as a natural flood basin and a rich breeding ground for fish.
- Overloading of boats often takes places. If you feel the boat is so overloaded to be unsafe, get off
